Fokke Moerel

Partner, and Architect, Fokke Moerel (NL) directs MVRDV’s Studio Public, a unit within the office that focuses primarily on projects that have a dedicated urban impact. These include public, and cultural buildings, as well as transformations of monumental buildings that endeavour to revive their immediate urban context. To this end, the office’s interior design team is also within Studio Public, generating a strong relationship between interior and exterior public program. A clear example of this is the Depot Boijmans Van Beuningen in Rotterdam, which Moerel is leading. As a fully publically accessible art depot, it opens its doors to the public in 2021, bringing all visitors into a close connection with renowned masterpieces, and with the city. In addition to this, Moerel has lead award-winning designs such as the Baltyk office tower in Poznan, Poland, the Book Mountain Library in Spijkenisse, and the Lloyd Hotel & Cultural Embassy in Amsterdam.

Coming from a family of designers, Moerel’s professional presence extends beyond practice to include teaching or serving as a guest critic for academies, and universities worldwide. Moerel herself has a master’s degree in architecture from the Academy of Architecture Rotterdam, and a BA in interior architecture from the Willem de Kooning Academy. She has taught at Harvard and Cambridge alongside MVRDV Founding Partner, Nathalie de Vries, at the Silpakorn University in Bangkok, Thailand, and is currently tutoring at The Hague Royal Academy of Arts. Moerel is also an external critic at the Academy of Architecture Rotterdam.

Marco Casagrande
Architect, Principal, Casagrande Laboratory, Professor, Bergen School of Architecture, Vice President, International Society of Biourbanism

 

Marco Casagrande (born 1971) graduated from the Helsinki University of Technology Department of Architecture in 2001. From the early stages of his career Casagrande started to mix architecture with other disciplines of art and science landing with a series of ecologically conscious architectural installations around the world. All in all, more than 70 realized works in 14 countries. He is the laureate of the European Prize for Architecture 2013, Committee of International Architecture Critics CICA Award 2013 for conceptual and artistic architecture and UNESCO & Locus Foundation’s Global Award for Sustainable Architecture 2015. 

Casagrande’s works and teaching are moving freely in-between architecture, landscape architecture, urban and environmental design and science, environmental art and circus adding up into cross-over architectural thinking of «commedia dell’architettura», a broad vision of built human environment tied into social drama and environmental awareness. «There is no other reality than nature». He views architects as design shamans merely interpreting what the bigger nature of the shared mind is transmitting. 

He views cities as complex energy organisms in which different overlapping layers of energy flows are determining the actions of the citizens as well as the development of the city. By mixing environmentalism and urban design Casagrande is developing methods of punctual manipulation of the urban energy flows in order to create an ecologically sustainable urban development towards the so-called Third Generation City. The theory views the future urban development as the ruin of the industrial city, an organic machine ruined by nature including human nature.

Jyrki Keinänen luotsaa suomalaista rakentamisen suunnittelu- ja konsulttiyhtiö A-Insinöörejä (AINS Group). Hän on kansainvälisissä hankkeissa kouliintunut projektiluotsi ja toiminut työurallaan johtotehtävissä useissa konsultti- ja rakennusalan yhtiöissä sekä RIL:issä. 

Jyrki on luottamuksen voimaan uskova liiketoimintajohtaja ja ennakkoluuloton kiinteistö- ja rakennusalan alan kehittäjä, joka puhuu intohimoisesti paremman rakentamisen, yhteistoimintamallien, digitaalisten ratkaisujen soveltamisen ja arvontuoton puolesta. Elina Koskela

Jonas Nordgren

Jonas Nordgren, co-founder of Schauman Nordgren Architects (SNA), is a member of the Danish Architect Association (MAA) as well as the Swedish Association of Architects (SAR). Jonas Nordgren is a graduated architect from the Royal Academy of Fine Arts in Copenhagen as well as a furniture designer from the Danish Design School. In 2005 he was elected by Wallpaper as one of the worlds 10 most wanted designers. Since then he has exhibited internationally and also been published in various magazines and books such as Casa da Habitare, Wallpaper, Blueprint and the book Nordic Designers. In 2012 Jonas Nordgren graduated as an architect with honors. Today, Jonas Nordgren is leading SNA together with Ted Schauman and works with the studio's projects both in Denmark and in Finland.

Søren Øllgaard

Henning Larsen

Drawing on his sharp sense of concept development, Søren focuses primarily on competitions in Denmark, Sweden and France. As the head partner for the French market, he recently spearheaded the team behind Henning Larsen’s first winning project in France, The European Medicines Agency (EMA) Headquarters in Lille. This building embodies Henning Larsen’s approach to stimulating working environments with optimal use of natural daylight, a comfortable indoor climate and green outdoor spaces. It is also a shining example of Søren’s deep understanding of architecture’s unique ability create identity for companies and comfort for employees. Søren is a strategic thinker with extensive experience in dynamic concept development, workshops and communication with large companies and user groups. These talents also made him the natural choice to head commercial projects such as Nordea Bank in Ørestaden and the Novo Nordisk Headquarters in Bagsværd.

He also has considerable experience with construction on waterfronts, including posts as design director for Sønderborg Tower Hotel & Waterpark on Sønderborg Harbor and for the award-winning residential complex Bølgen (The Wave) at Vejle Fjord. 

Søren’s approach to the design process is characterized by co-creative and dialog-oriented architecture. He successfully integrated these traits into Nordea’s headquarters, a building that sets new standards for openness in the financial sector, with features such as an atrium open to the public, while consideration of future generations is evident in its sustainable profile and ambitious LEED Platinum certification. Søren also headed the winning competition team for Tingsretten (District Court) in Malmö, Sweden, whose design is rooted in the concepts of transparency and openness in the workings of the judicial system.

In recent years, Søren has acquired gained in-depth experience with turnkey contracts. He was at the forefront of the competition for Göteborg City Gate, the Swedish city of Gothenburg’s distinctive new landmark. This 30-story office building was realized through a fruitful collaboration with Skanska, while the EMA headquarters in Lille was designed in tandem with Bouygues Construction. 

In 2013, Søren completed the Creative Leadership of Knowledge Companies course of studies. He has also served as a jury member for the Danish Academic Architectural Association and is an examiner at the Royal Danish Academy of Fine Arts, School of Architecture and at Aarhus School of Architecture.

Helena Soimakallio

Ms. Soimakallio is an experienced leader of both private and public organisations Before joining Finnish technology Industries she has served in various executive and expert positions in energy, construction, consulting engineering and technology industries almost 30 years. Helena is entrusted with numerous national and international committee memberships in the fields of energy, technology and built environment including being currently a Member of the National Commission on Sustainable Development, member of the Prime Minister’s Round Table of Climate Change and member of the National Sustainable Recovery working group. Last year Helena led the Finnish technology industries low-carbon roadmap 2035 project. Her expertise has also been used to produce similar roadmaps for other sectors such as ict, construction, transportation and energy. She holds several Board memberships being among others the Chairman of the Board of METSTA (Mechanical Engineering and Metals Industry Standardization Body in Finland) and Member of the Board of the GTK (Geological Survey of Finland). Helena has been awarded with several badges of merit by professional institutions, including national “ga Prize” for the preparation of Strategic Knowledge Initiative of Built Environment.

PAES Architecture was founded in 2020 by Noud Paes. The past 14 years he has worked on a wide range of projects as project architect and partner at Paul de Ruiter Architects. From residential building to international school and from innovation centre to villa. Sustainability is always central. For each assignment, the art is in finding solutions that fit the characteristics of the task at hand, based on a strong vision on sustainability. For a residential building, for example, it is about socially and environmentally inclusive construction. While for an innovation centre it is about energy neutrality and certification, such as BREEAM. But always with the aim of maximum quality, minimum environmental impact.
